What does it look like to provide opportunities for meaningful participation of people with lived experience in non-profit organizations? In this workshop, we look inwards as we examine how to challenge the structures and systems in the non-profit sector to better incorporate participation from a rights perspective. Participation is a core principle of a human rights approach, but too often it is given only lip service. Using examples from our work in meeting with residents, community organizations, and others, we examine the challenges and barriers that we (and other non-profit organizations) have had in creating spaces that value participation. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk about their own experiences with participation in the non-profit world, and how to better realize this important human right.
